Strayless – Redirection & 404 Monitor Plugin for WordPress

Redirects and 404 monitor for WordPress, with regex rules, smart 404 fallback and reports

Free plugin: download the zip, then in WordPress go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. Pro is an add-on that needs it.

Strayless is a redirect manager and 404 monitor for WordPress. Every moved page, renamed post or deleted product leaves old links that now end in "Page not found". Strayless sends those old URLs to the right place and shows you which missing URLs visitors and search engines still ask for, so you keep your traffic, your backlinks and your Google rankings.

Why 404 errors hurt SEO. Broken links waste link equity from backlinks, frustrate visitors and send crawlers into dead ends. A proper 301 redirect passes the old page's value to the new one and keeps customers on your site.

Free: everyday redirects done right. Create 301, 302, 307, 308 and 410 (Gone) redirects, get an automatic 301 whenever you change a post or page slug, and stay safe with built-in redirect-loop protection. The 404 log lists every missing URL with its hit count, and you can fix any of them with one click.

Pro: power tools for big sites and migrations. Strayless Pro adds wildcard and regex redirects with $1 captures, conditional redirects by login status, user role, referrer, device, language or cookie, and a smart 404 fallback that sends visitors to the closest matching post, a page you choose or the home page. Trashed content can redirect to its parent page or category automatically. Move redirects in and out with CSV import plus Apache (.htaccess) and Nginx rule export, find redirect chains and flatten them in one click, get a 30-day report and a weekly 404 email, and manage everything from WP-CLI.

Fast and privacy-friendly. Everything runs inside WordPress with no external service. Each lookup is a single indexed database query, repeated 404 hits update one row, and no IP addresses or user agents are stored.

Who it's for: bloggers changing permalinks, WooCommerce stores removing products, agencies running site migrations and redesigns, and SEO professionals cleaning up crawl errors from Google Search Console.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the free version?

Yes. Strayless Pro is an add-on, so install and activate the free Strayless plugin first (Download free plugin button on this page, then Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin), then Pro.

How do I create a 301 redirect in WordPress with Strayless?

Open Strayless, add the old URL as the source and the new URL as the target, choose 301 (permanent) and save. The redirect works straight away.

Does it redirect automatically when I change a post slug?

Yes. When you change the slug of a post or page, Strayless adds a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one automatically.

How do I find and fix 404 errors?

Strayless logs every URL that returns "Page not found", with how often it was hit. Click fix next to any entry to redirect it to the right page.

Can I use regex or wildcard redirects?

Yes, with Pro. Wildcard and regular-expression rules support $1 captures, ideal for moving whole folders or changing permalink structures.

Can I import redirects from another plugin or a spreadsheet?

Yes, with Pro. Import redirects from a CSV file, and export your rules as Apache (.htaccess) or Nginx config.

Does it slow down your site?

No. Each lookup is a single indexed database query, and repeated 404 hits on the same URL update one row.

Does it store personal data?

No IP addresses or user agents are stored, which keeps the 404 log privacy-friendly.

What happens if my licence expires?

All your redirects keep working; only the Pro features and updates pause until you renew.
